Enjoy a full day trip up to the Lassithi Plateau with majestic views and off-roading thrown in. Keep your eyes open for eagles & vultures. Explore Greek mythology and visit the birthplace of the Greek god Zeus. Also visit a 2000 year old plane tree in Krassi.
This tour takes you high up into the Dikti Range of mountains to the Plateau of Lassithi (850 metres above sea level).
We will pick you up from your accommodation at 10 am and then go on our way onwards and upwards into the Dikti range. On a steady climb the views will be outstanding and you'll pass through several traditional and very picturesque mountain villages, there will be plenty of opportunities to stop for photos or maybe coffee at a real taverna.
At the Lassithi Plateau you may well see Eagles and Vultures as both nest around this area. You will begin to circle the plateau, soaking up the scenery until we reach the base of Mount Spathi (2,140 metres above sea level) second highest on the island. On the north face of Spathi is the Psychro Cave , the birth place of the greek god Zeus.
From here you have a 15 minute uphill walk to the entrance to the cave , it's a fairly steep climb and may not suit very elderly or disabled people. At the cave there is a small entrance fee to be paid and from there follow the defined path down into the spectacular cave. Again it's steep in and out but there are hand rails and proper steps. The cave is beautifully lit and photos are a must, but please note, No Flash Photography.
After the cave you shall be taken for your traditional cretan meze lunch which includes local wine . Please inform us if you have special dietary requirements.
After lunch you'll continue around the plateau and then descend taking in views of the north coast and the impressive Aposelemis Dam Which holds 27,000,000 cubic metres of water, again plenty of photo opportunities. You will then visit the oldest plane tree on the island (2400 yrs old) as well as the male monastery at Selinari.
This tour contains many outstanding views therefore there are a number of stopping points on route, but the driver will be happy to stop anywhere you choose provided it's safe to do so.
